Fibre Cracking on Folded ProductsAre you fed up with all that cracking on your digital print or litho stock? It’s so frustrating that you have to keep worrying whether the cracking on your folded products will be rejected by your customers.

If you have thought about purchasing one of the many Rule and Matrix machines that are on the market, you may have heard positive reports such as good creasing, reliable and efficient etc. As creasing innovators we also hear the good things, but equally we get to hear the negative side and this is why we decided to build the SpeedCreasa.

Here are the main disadvantages in using a Rule and Matrix style creasing machine:

  • Output speed is very slow, averaging approximately 2,000 products per hour or less. Because there is only one active creasing rule the output decreases substantially for every extra crease that is added to the sheet, so actual creased copies produced can dramatically fall to to just a few hundred per hour
  • Creases are commonly applied to one side of the sheet only, this means that cracking may occur on one of the areas where the fold is reversed
  • The creases applied are designed predominately for heavy stock, so when medium to light materials are processed the crease is visibly too wide and the fold is harder to implement in exactly the right place
  • There is a lack of versatility as these machines do not have micro-perforation or cutting options
  • The long term wear caused by the constant  rise and fall motion breeds negativity for those that require maintenance free creasing for many years to come

The list above are the top 5 reasons why companies have approached Tech-ni-Fold for an alternative creasing solution

Here's more bad news, rotary scoring doesn't stop cracking either

As we have clearly established the negative side to Rule & Matrix solutions it seems natural that some people may turn to the much faster rotary scoring machines. However, many of us already know that rotary scoring devices that are used on these machines simply do not work, and listed below are the four main reasons why:

  1. Scoring devices all use destructive steel scoring blades The steel male/female construction that combine are too harsh for the material and usually either crushes, splits or damages the fibres of the substrate, particularly if it has a UV varnish or gloss finish. Dry and brittle toner based digital stocks stand no chance and are usually cut in half.
  2. Scoring devices produce a V-shaped impression All the pressure from the steel scoring disc is exerted at the point of the V instead of spreading it evenly across the impression like creasing methods. If you were to look into a magnifying glass at the score just after it was applied you would already see fibres breaking away along a thin line in the centre of the impression. Successful creasing applies the desired impression evenly across an area to form the “shoulder” so that there is room for the fold to be implemented without damage to that area of stock. Scoring techniques simply do not create the correct depth and shape required for successful results.
  3. Scoring devices produce only one score setting If you think about it, successful creasing relies on a combination of various crease width and depth settings for a multitude of stock ranges. So why do we expect a single scoring device to cope with everything? Scoring devices rely on the skill of the operator to create an acceptable score width by opening up or closing two collars directly underneath the blade. It’s more like a balancing act to achieve a reasonable width and depth of score without cutting the sheet in half or creating such a weak and ineffective impression. Scoring from the Inside
  4. Scoring devices all apply the score to the inside of the subsequent fold.  All Scoring devices work the opposite way to the proven creasing method in that they work from the inside pushing the fibres of the stock outward. As a result the inside of the folded product will sometimes be acceptable but the depth and shape of the score isn’t sufficient enough to prevent the fibres on the outside of the fold from bursting open and this is the most critical area.

Read on to learn how you can achieve the speed of rotary scoring with the quality of Cylinder creasing

So here is a short summary of our findings so far - Rule and Matrix machines are notoriously slow and Scoring methods, although fast, damage many stocks. So what about discarding the worst elements of both and combining the best to bring you rotary creasing?

Imagine what it would be like if you could purchase a simple and affordable compact rotary action table-top machine that produces Cylinder style creasing. What if the machine had the added bonus of being able to produce Cylinder style micro-perforating and guillotine quality cutting as an option? What if the results were so good you couldn’t tell the difference from what you would get from a flatbed Cylinder?

Introducing the
an affordable and fast table top solution
to end your creasing nightmares

Through massive customer feedback and the high demand to fill a huge gap in the market we came up with a unique solution based on the success of our first invention, the Tri-Creaser.

The Tri-Creaser is the world’s only rotary device that produces Cylinder quality creasing that totally eliminates fibre cracking (30,000 already sold world-wide for use on folders).

We designed a precision built machine called the Speedcreasa to harness the best Tri-Creaser  technology and make it available for printers who require a cost-effective solution to the problem of fibre cracking.

The Tri-Creaser system is revolutionary because it:

  1. Replaces the destructive steel scoring concept Softer Creasing with no Damage to Paper Fibreswith a softer patented creasing solution that penetrates the material up to three times deeper, without splitting or damaging the stock. The forgiving and gentle application manipulates and stretches even the most difficult print and stock combinations known to us, including oven baked web offset and toner based digital applications.
  2. Replaces the V shape scoreU Shaped Crease for a rounded or U-shaped crease that spreads the impression evenly across the width without the distortion to the centre that is common with other devices. The much greater depth of the crease simply forces the material to form the shape of the set female channel opposite and this is the BIG difference.
  3. Replaces the regular single score setting8 Creasing Options for 8 crease options that easily stops the cracking on the full range of materials that you may deal with from 85-350gsm regardless of grain direction, solid ink coverage or whether it has been UV varnished or laminated. The Tri-Creaser has all the crease settings machined into it so the user doesn’t have to spend endless hours experimenting; in fact, all the thinking has been done so that all the guess work is eliminated.
  4. Replaces the method of scoring on the inside of Reverse Crease Applicationthe product through the effective reverse crease application This means that the device works directly on top of the area that is prone to cracking, gently pushing the fibres back inside the product. We know that cracking to the outside is eliminated this way but also see that a perfect bead has formed on the inside and is highlighted once the folded product is re-opened. This demonstrates the depth of crease penetration from the outside through to the inside of the product and conclusively proves that the perfect letterpress method can be replicated in rotary fashion.

The Speedcreasa puts Industrial Strength Letterpress quality at your fingertips in a small, table top format

The Speedcreasa can be set up in minutes with the minimum amount of training or expertise. Its versatile working width of 480mm has been designed to compliment any modern print room on demand production environment.

The Speedcreasa is a highly versatile system opening a brand new chapter in offline creasing and print finishing.

With the SpeedCreasa you can:

  • Totally eliminate fibre cracking, even on digital stocks, regardless of grain direction
  • Choose from any one of 8 crease styles to suit every range of stock, not restricted to wide setting
  • Produce simultaneous multiple crease, micro-perf and cutting without affecting speed
  • Apply crease or micro-perfs to either side of sheet, or both at the same time
  • Produce flat, nearly invisible micro-perforations that let sheets run through any laser printer or copier
  • Crease paper from 85gsm through to 350gsm and above
  • Finish short-run jobs in minutes
  • Eliminate scoring and perf out-sourcing

"I just started using my new Speedcreasa and am thrilled with the results…Perfect Creasing - No Fibre CrackingNo more cracking or flaking.

We had been planning to purchase one of the other top selling creasers until I discovered the Speedcreasa and the Tri-Creaser at the On Demand Show. Upon completion of an amazingly thorough demo, I bought on the spot.’

I purchased the Speedcreasa with every option available – I can crease, do single or double micro-perfs, kiss cut, slit, double-cut or edge trim, all for much less cost than the competition.

With the Speedcreasa I have it all: Easy set up, run heavier stocks, greater production and dependability.’
